Top 10 Global Companies of 2018: French Luxury Brands Lead

BrandZ’s list of the top French global brands by market value highlights the country’s luxury sector, which occupies six of the top ten places. 

Six of the top ten French global brands are of the luxury sector, which has seen a 5% jump in value in 2017. The BrandZ ranking by market research company Kantar Millar Brown reveals the top 50 French global brands that have a combined market value of $240bn, or one-tenth of the French economy.

Louis Vuitton bags first place, while Hermes and L’Oreal Paris come in second and third. The top 6 luxury brands have a combined value of $89bn.

The study notes that the world’s fastest growing major economy represents a staggering one third of the luxury market: “Purchases made abroad by Chinese consumers increased, and now represent 32% of all luxury purchases made worldwide.” The market grew 5% in 2017 according to Bain and Company.

Hermes displaces L’Oreal which was second in the last report. On the new top two, the report notes: “These two brands [Louis Vuitton and Hermes] are considered to have a unique know-how when it comes to hand-made luxury goods. Both have shown substantial growth since the last top 100 global brands report in June 2017.”

See the top 10 below. Brand value is arrived at by combining: earnings attributed to that brand; an assessment of the future multiple of those earnings; and a calculation of the portion of earnings derived solely from the brand. The research covers 3.2 million consumers and 100,000 brands.
