The Picasso Museum in Paris’ Marais neighborhood now set to reopen in October 2014

The long-awaited reopening of the Picasso Museum is scheduled to take place on October 25th 2014, the 133rd anniversary of the Spanish-born artist’s birth. The re-launch was originally planned for June 2014. We reported on it back in April as part of our series on major projects that are enhancing parts of Paris.

The museum is housed in the magnificent 17th-century Hôtel Salé, one of the Marais neighborhood’s finest palaces. It closed in 2009 for extensive refurbishment and expansion. The work has overrun both its schedule and its budget: the cost has more than doubled from the original budget of €24 million to €52 million. The museum hit the headlines in May, when the French culture ministry sacked the former director, Anne Baldassari. Laurent Le Bon from the Centre Pompidou-Metz replaced her.

Controversy aside, the revamped museum promises to provide a more fitting backdrop for Pablo Picasso’s works. Designed by French architect Jean-François Bodin, the remodeled space includes a new entrance, garden and coffee shop. Enlarged exhibition areas will enable more of the 5,000 works held by the museum to be on display.
