The most beautiful painters’ homes to visit in Ile-de-France

Known for its abundance of artistic inspiration, the Ile-de-France region has won over many painters who came to set up homes and studios. Places of life and artistic creation, many of the houses occupied by renowned artists have retained their charm of yesteryear, and make for great day trips from Paris.

Rosa Bonheur’s castle in Thomery

This charming residence located near Fontainebleau was that of the painter Rosa Bonheur at the end of the 19th century. Adored for her talent and ardor, she was often visited by some of the greatest European sovereigns, including Empress Eugènie. Whether in the artist’s hushed bedroom or in her magical studio, the closets are full of unexplored treasures that have been sleeping for over a century!

Gustave Moreau’s house in Paris

In the heart of the 9th arrondissement, the home of the Symbolist painter is truly frozen in time: the first floor is dedicated to the artist’s private apartments, while the last two, even more impressive, are huge workshops where you can see some of Moreau’s works on display. Last but not least, the beautiful spiral staircase leading to the top floor will leave you breathless in more ways than one!

The home of Eugène Delacroix in Paris

The home-studio of the artist who painted “Liberty leading the people” is too little known to Parisians and tourists for our taste. However, the house and its garden, occupied by the painter during the last years of his life, have an incredible charm. A real gem in the heart of the 6th arrondissement, the place brings together more than a thousand works!

Rodin’s villa in Meudon

The artist’s place of life and creation during the last 20 years of his life, Rodin’s villa has not lost any of its period charm. Walk through the lovely rooms that make up the Villa des Brillants that Rodin occupied in 1895, then in the vast meditative park in which Le Penseur sits. Bathed in light, the plaster gallery sublimates the works in a harmony of whiteness. Superb and only 30 minutes by public transport from Paris!

Van Gogh’s bedroom in Auvers-sur-Oise

From 1890, the painter was housed in a modest 7 m2 attic, for 3.50 francs per day, at the Auberge Ravoux. Lit by a simple skylight, the “suicide room” is the scene of the last moments of the artist’s life. It is now empty but keeps within it the fond memory of an unparalleled artistic sensitivity.
