Paris tops London, Sydney, New York and Los Angeles

Paris continues its winning streak after topping the Anholt-GfK City Brands Index, a measure of its attractiveness to outsiders. This comes after it recently topped rankings for luxury retailing and property markets.

Paris has topped the Anholt-GfK City Brands Index for the second year in a row, and the fourth time in the survey’s history. See the full table below, in which it outranks London, Sydney, New York and Los Angeles on measures covering six ‘P’s.

Presence: the city’s international status and standing. Paris was the third-most visited city in the world in 2017 according to Conde Nast Traveller, and has had the top spot in years gone by.

Place: the physical outdoors and transport. Its architecture and city planning are unrivaled globally. Haussmann’s 19th-century renovation gave it a uniformity and a logic other cities envy, and its obsession with appearance – luxury, cosmetic and fashion industries dominate – is no accident. While the metro system might not be held in the same esteem, Paris is one of the most densely served cities in the world with many stops a mere hundred meters apart.

Prerequisites: its ability to fulfill basic requirements like affordable accommodation and good standard public amenities.  Paris outranks the next four cities in the list, with your dollar will netting you a larger property than in London, Sydney or New York (if you look outside of the luxury segment).

People: friendliness, cultural diversity and perceptions of public safety. Parisians usually speak great English and the city has a young diverse population on par with London and New York. Perceptions of public safety were affected by the events of late 2015 but visitor numbers picked back up strongly in 2017.

Pulse: interesting things to do. You’d be hard pressed to find a city with more restaurants, cafes, museums, galleries, monuments, beautiful walking routes and historic landmarks than Paris. It also has a thriving underground culture.

Potential: availability of economic and educational opportunities. Paris is a start-up hub, with thousands of entrepreneurs shattering the perception of the country as a bureaucratic or parochial approach to work. Median earnings will afford you a better quality of life than most of the other cities in the top five, too (especially London).

The survey was conducted in September and October 2017, by interviewing over 5,000 people in Australia, Brazil, China, France, Germany, India, Russia, South Korea, UK, and USA, on how they viewed the cities.
