Picasso’s first workshop for sale in Paris

One hundred years ago, a 19-year-old artist named Picasso settled into an atelier along the cobblestone streets of the 18th arrondissement in Paris.  Today, Picasso’s first Montmartre workshop has been converted into an apartment and is now on the market for €1,500,000.

With views of Sacre Coeur and an ideal location in the heart of old Montmartre, the property is described as “playing a fundamental part in forming the artist’s abstract style, this unique Paris apartment is a rare combination of contemporary home and art history” in the article on TheMoveChannel.com. The property, which is currently owned by a photographer, has been divided into two studios with a loft apartment above. A small plaque on the outside wall confirms that it was Picasso’s first workshop. Picasso produced several paintings in the workshop, including the famous Le Moulin de la Galette after settling there in 1900, at the age of 19 years old.  After his friend Casegamas, who also lived in the property, committed suicide Picasso entered his ‘blue period’ there.  He is believed to have lived in the property for a number of years, though its close proximity to dance halls and brothels proved to be both a distraction and a source of subject material.   Read the full article via A Place in the Sun.
